What do #SEL and hip hop have in common?Unlocking emotions. Connecting with others. Expressing yourself. Goal setting. Increasing empathy. What else?Check out this all star article on the intersection between SEL and hip hop.One of my favorite parts: "As a hip-hop devotee and educator, weaving hip-hop into SEL has been my passion project. Witnessing its power to resonate with youth on a profound level, I utilize it to connect with students through their own cultural lens. This fosters engagement, understanding and demonstrates the importance of meeting them where they are."What are some unique ways you weave SEL into your practice/teaching/world?#SEL #education #innovation #community #communityimpact #hiphop

Meeting kids where they are and infusing art, literature, and music they can connect to is key to supporting and fostering their social-emotional education and well-being.Love this #hiphop #SEL approach by Jamila Sams MA.ED to provide a safe and engaging path for kids to learn to express themselves and their emotions and to give them skills and tools they will carry throughout their lives."Hip-hop becomes more than music; it becomes a life-learning tool, shaping them into not just better learners, but emotionally intelligent individuals...Imagine classrooms pulsing with hip-hop's beat, a backdrop for self-expression, emotional literacy, and goal-setting. This unconventional approach breaks boundaries, infusing freshness into learning. As a hip-hop educator, I've seen this fusion unlock student potential, sparking curiosity and paving the way for a dynamic, engaging experience. Through this vibrant collaboration of hip-hop and SEL, we can cultivate culturally responsive, nurturing environments for the holistic development of our youth."https://lnkd.in/e7P46j3x

Albert Einstein once said, “Play is the highest form of research.” And I agree.Play is serious business. It’s how children learn and rehearse empathy, creativity, connection, and other crucialskills as they grow. But as the world and our lives at home change, so does the way our children play.Today, at the first-ever annual International Day of Play designated by the United Nations, IKEA launches its latestPlay Report: a research looking into the role of play inrelation tothewell-being ofchildren.Read all about the findings here:https://lnkd.in/evH2NE_G

///////\As the ancient proverb says, 'til the lion writes history, the hunter will be the hero.Somebody who's not for me can never correctly tell my story. So, neither corporate America's entertainment industry nor mainstream media is authorized to tell it.Our story belongs to participants and pioneers, primary sources of Hip Hop culture who speak from our ways of knowing and lived experiences.Three questions frame the analysis of the Hip Hop Grew Up narrative: • How is Hip Hop enduring in its 40s, as it turns 50? • How, as growing adults, have members of the Hip Hop generation renegotiated our relationship(s) to Hip Hop culture? • How does the Hip Hop generation leverage its resources for today's generation? \\\\\\\/ We kept things simple at this youth-centered #HipHop50 event in South Austin. 50 years ago (officially) this event was impossible.Unfathomable. And the emcee would certainly not have been the center of attention. So, for this assembly, I emceed with respect to the turntables and the floor. It's principle over paradigm, which is elementary. Even when I'm out of my element, I am still in my elements. I emcee with the mind of a scholar. I'm a scholar with the mind of an emcee. #HipHopGrewUp #HipHop50#ScholarEmcee #GetAnEducation#CreateAndHustle

I almost forgot to celebrate a monumental milestone – the 50th anniversary of Hip Hop! Like dope beats and rhymes in Hip Hop, effective recruiting and retention strategies can provide creativity and swagger. For over 50 years, Hip Hop continues to unite diverse voices and communities through music, dance, and art. Similarly, successful recruitment and retention strategies blend different elements to create a powerful impact. Just as Hip Hop artists use their unique styles to captivate audiences, we tailor our strategies to resonate with individuals, showcasing each organization's distinct identity and values. In the spirit of Hip Hop's evolution, our recruitment and retention techniques adapt and innovate. Hip Hop's ability to stay relevant and influential over five decades mirrors our commitment to staying at the forefront of strategies that attract and engage talent. We understand the importance of fostering a sense of belonging, empowerment, and growth within teams, just as Hip Hop has done within its global community. So, #Salute to 50th years of Hip Hop – a testament to the power of creativity, connection, and authenticity.#CantStopWontStop #HappyBirthdayHipHop #JustThrowYourHandsInAir #RecruitmentStrategies #ConsultWithWalt

We Jam Econo: Embracing the Punk Rock Ethos in Everyday Life.I’m a boarding school kid.I went to Buxton School, a small 85-student boarding school in Williamstown MA.26 kids in my graduating class. We had report letters instead of grades, called teachers by their first name, no TV, and lots of music played from records.Students did most of the maintenance, we ate dinner family-style and we were encouraged to think for ourselves.I was greatly influenced by the DIY ethos and listened to a lot of punk rock.I still am and I still do. The Minutemen, Minor Threat, Husker Du, The Velvet Underground, The Gun Club, Black Flag, X, The Replacements, The Dead Kennedys, so many great bands from that era. I wasn’t one of the cool kids, I was an outcast, a loser, and the DIY Punk Rock mindset of being myself and f*ck whoever didn’t like it was so comforting, it gave me an identity.Things look different now, I own a home and a successful business, I’m lucky to be married to a woman I love, and I’m a big fan of fleece and Hokas. What hasn’t changed is my love of punk rock music, my need to do ‘the right thing’, and my inability to be anything other than my most authentic self. That’s how we run our paid media agency Fast + Light. Fast + Light is a climbing term for getting to the top of a mountain with the least possible gear as quickly as possible. We do the right things the right way for the right reasons, we act like who we really are, no bullsh*t.It’s the best way to live, personally and professionally, individual or brand. "It's not how you look, but how you feel." –Minor Threat, Betray
